Working With Religious Communities

  • Notify the places of worship in your community that May is VICTIMS OF PORNOGRAPHY AWARENESS MONTH. Propose that they set aside a Sunday in May or weekdays to commemorate this month.
  • Share all parts of the "VICTIMS OF PORNOGRAPHY AWARENESS MONTH" resource kit with the religious leaders in your community.
  • Provide information on victims of pornography, harms, scriptural references to "guarding your heart and mind" as well as "how to care for the broken, wounded or hurting;" what it means to be faithful, etc. in the weekly bulletin or church newsletter during the month of May.
Create a one-page sheet on what one person can do. Also list harms of pornography.  It should be the size of a church bulletin insert.
  • Work with religious leaders to establish study groups or support groups within their congregations on the problems of pornography, family violence, how it affects communities, and recommendations for change.
  • Encourage religious communities to participate in or take on some of the above-mentioned events.
Use May as a time to encourage involvement by congregations in pornography prevention by volunteering with a local effort, raising or donating money.
  • Have a key author come and do a book signing at a bookstore. Also, have him/her speak on porn victims, or the role pornography plays in victimization.
  • Contact the churches or Christian bookstores in your area. Tell them about VICTIMS OF PORNOGRAPHY AWARENESS MONTH. Ask them to focus various activities towards this issue (churches: bulletin inserts; women's evening event with special speaker; library with displayed material, etc. Bookstores: special books displayed; book signing; flier with "harms" inserted in bags; poster on store door etc..

Working With The Media

  • Develop information packets and press kits for both print and broadcast media in your "community" (state, region or municipality). Include information about your organization, a schedule of events for May, and facts about pornography and its victims.
  • Use media "community calendars" to publicize May events. These are generally free.
  • Promote the use of print ads by newspapers, magazines, and newsletters during May.
  • Promote the use of television and radio public service announcements (PSAs) during May.
  • Produce your own local radio/TV PSAs for May. You may wish to contact your local cable or university station to assist with this effort.
  • Submit an article for publication in local newspapers and organizational newsletters.
  • Send a letter to the editor describing your concern for victims of pornography.
  • Educate the public on this key issue affecting the well-being of children, women and their families, by writing a guest editorial or an op ed piece for publication in May.
  • Take photographs of your events. There are times when newspapers will not print your story (not newsworthy enough) but may be wi11ing to print your photo with a caption.
  • Involve media celebrities in May activities. This can increase potential for media coverage.
  • Contact local public cable companies and have them air an educational video such as Empty Embrace several times during NATIONAL VICTIMS OF PORNOGRAPHY AWARENESS MONTH on their local public access channel. Videos are available in VHS format by calling (714)435-9056 or by writing
    1. Enough Is Enough, 3000 West McArthur, Santa Ana, CA 92704.
    2. National Coalition for the Protection of Children & Families, 800 Compton Rd., Cincinnati, Ohio 45231 (513)521-6627
  • Put an article in your Homeowners Association Newsletter or Neighborhood Watch Newsletter.
  • Create fliers for use as shopping bag stuffers by retailers, Christian business owners, or as bill or statement stuffers by utilities, banks, etc.
  • Visit your local video or Blockbuster store(s), donate or ask them to obtain copies of Empty Embrace (or other suggested video) for their family/free rental section.
  • Produce and publicize a "Victims Yel1ow Pages," a listing of telephone numbers of local and national telephone numbers of services available to children and families. Categories of services include child abuse, counseling, health services, emergency and legal services.
  • Get secular or Christian radio stations to join with you as the official sponsors of NATIONAL VICTIMS OF PORNOGRAPHY AWARENESS MONTH for your area. They can then mention this throughout the month as they lead into their news stories, weather; or any segue to their programming. Additionally, they could promote your activities, host or emcee your event, develop programming about your event or about victims of pornography in general.
  • Contact the local chapter of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) and explore ways you can work together to achieve your public awareness goals for May.
  • Provide training for a Speakers Bureau on the pornography victims issue. Have a list available with contact numbers and biographical information.
