SEVERAL WAYS YOU CAN START TO
RECOGNIZE VICTIMS OF PORNOGRAPHY

You can make a difference in your community by educating others about the harms of pornography.  Here is a partial list of activities and ideas you can  implement throughout the whole year.

  • Contact other related local organizations (including child abuse prevention, adult survivors of incest and sexual abuse, rape crisis and domestic violence centers, pro-family and Christian groups) and create a coalition.  Find out what other local organizations might do to assist, collectively or individually.
  • Acquaint spokespersons(s) for your organization with the most recent statistics on pornography, rape, molestation etc.  State and local statistics and specific information about your organization -- its goals, activities, accomplishments, and supporters, and how recognizing the victims of pornography relates to your overall objectives.
  • Create a supply of necessary publications and brochures to heightened awareness.

PREPARATION FOR MAY, 2000

KICK-OFF ACTIVITIES

  • Issue "media alerts" or press releases to radio and television stations, newspapers, and civic and social organizations, announcing that May is " NATIONAL VICTIMS OF PORNOGRAPHY MONTH"
  • Put up a billboard about the victims of pornography. Include a help number.
  • "Kick-off" the month with a press conference on the steps of your city or county building.  Victims giving their short testimonies, and phone numbers where others can obtain help should be available.

WORKING WITH MEDIA

  • Promote the use of print ads by newspapers, magazines, and newsletters during May.
  • Submit an article for publication in local newspapers and organizational newsletters.  Reprint permission is granted, providing you do not change the content and you retain the author's name.
  • Send a letter to the editor describing your concern for victims of pornography.
  • Visit your local video or Blockbuster store(s), donate or ask them to obtain copies of  Empty Embrace [or other suggested video] for their family/free rental section.  Videos are available in VHS format by calling (703) 278-8343 or by writing EIE, P.O. Box 888, Fairfax, VA  22030.
  • Get secular or Christian radio stations to join with you as the official sponsors of NATIONAL VICTIMS OF PORNOGRAPHY MONTH for your area.  They can then mention this throughout the month as they lead into their news stories, weather, or any segue to their programming.  Additionally, they could promote your activities, host or emcee your event, develop programming about your event or about victims of pornography in general.

These are just a few ideas to get you started.
